Cornelis van der Geest was a spice merchant from Antwerp, an important patron of the arts and a collector. This portrait was probably painted in about 1615, not long before Van Dyck travelled to England for the first time. A few years later, the portrait was enlarged: originally only the head and shoulders of van der Geest were visible.

Sir Anthony van Dyck was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England. 

This painting was commissioned to the highest quality and the close-up photo shows the detail that is present in the reproduction.
