(13 April 1769 – 7 January 1830) Thomas Lawrence was a leading English portrait painter who's work became known across Europe and he was the most fashionable artist of his time.
Lawrence was a child prodigy. He was born in Bristol and by the age of ten, having moved to Bath, he was supporting his family with his pastel portraits. When he moved to London after turnign 18, he soon established his reputation as a portrait painter in oils. He received his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790 and stayed at the top of his profession until his death.
Lawrence was completely self taught and was know for his exceptional skill in handling oil paint and capturing the likeness of his subjects. He became the fourth president of the Royal Academy in 1820.
In 1810 he acquired the generous patronage of the Prince Regent and after being commissioned to paint various leading figures across Europe, he became know, and since remembered as the Romantic portraitist of the Regency.
His reputation waned during Victorian times, but has since been partially restored.
