Here Schiele paints a portrait of himself and his childhood role model and mentor Gustav Klimt in stance which is unclear where one figure ends and the other begins - which Schiele describes as "important to the painting”.
The use of dark colours and sunken facial features creates an almost mournful feel to this piece; something which is amplified by the wilting rose in the bottom left corner. The use of bold, black lines is a common feature throughout his work.
Schiele wrote in one of his letters that he would not change anything about this painting, for: “it arose from pure ardency"
