Venus and Mars by Sandro Botticelli

Venus and Mars by Sandro Botticelli, 1485

Original Size: 68 x 27"

Mars (God of War) was one of the lovers of Venus (Goddess of Love) and this painting portrays the message of Love conquers all - or more specifically war.

The satyrs depicted in this painting have stolen the lance of Mars, therefore disarming him and making him vulnerable to the power of Love. He is shown to be sleeping the 'little death' which comes after making love, and not even a trumpet in his ear will wake him.

It was originally commissioned as a piece of furniture, perhaps a bed head or backboard from a chest and is painted on poplar wood using oils.
