This painting was originally commissioned through a poet (Angelo Poliziano) who was working on depicting the story for Lorenzo the Great - a common practise in 1480's Florence.
In this story we are shown the aftermath of Venus's creation - pushed along by the Gods of the winds who elevated this shell bearing Venus' triumphant nudity from the unknown depths of the sea. As she approaches the earth she becomes suddenly modest in her nudity which is portrayed in her stance.
