Jean Baptiste Gautier Dagoty was a court artist in the pre revolution French court. He became a favourite with Marie Antoinette and painted many portraits of her, though his work was not universally praised by art critics at the time. His work is firmly a product of the Rococo period with its elegant, ornate asymmetric and often playful compositions. This reaction to the earlier, stricter and more regulated classical baroque style may have been the reason that he received some scholarly criticism.
Painted in 1775, this is one of a number of portraits of Marie Antoinette attributed to Gautier-Dagoty that now hangs in the Museum of the Chateau de Versailles. The reproduction was commissioned to fit a 24” x 20” oval frame to match the period. The frame and all framing work were provided by Barton Galleries and completed to Fine Art Trade Guild standards.
